NATIONAL MENACE: WINNING ELECTIONS AT ALL COST SYNDROME OF NIGERIAN POLITICIANS A DO OR DIE AFFAIR

The winning at all cost of the Nigerian politics have taken a scary and life threatening dimension ,election in Nigeria and some parts of Africa has become a do or die affair where the winner takes all has developed a hydra headed approach and calls for serious concern.

The dynamics of electing leaders was in the past based on merit and performance as the candidates understood the essence of been elected a leader of a particular set of people with common interests and goals however in recent times this is not the case in the society.

Political appointments these days are seen as the avenue to make quick money that has little or no accountability to the people that put them in office, quite often than not the people have been betrayed by the same people that they elected into office immediately they are sworn in. embezzlement and self-aggrandizement is the order of the day. people have sold their conscience to mammon and the "god of money" how unfortunate.

The political and moral decadence is alarming and on the increase, a rising trend has been observed amongst the populace and the political elites . Political godfathers go all the way to anoint their godsons to office in a bid to be tools and puns that they will eventually use to control happenings and dictate the way the office they occupy will be run, all expenses are paid during the campaigns ,moneys are disbursed to all and sundries ,people are mobilized to ensure that their political prodigy assumes that office , because moneys are involved the voters get bribed with a few Naira notes usually less than 30$ to sell their conscience like the proverbial Esau in the bible that sold his birth right just for a bowl of porridge.

With this menace growing amongst the politicians ,of a truth the people are tired of shedding of blood of innocent Nigerians especially during and after elections all in a bid to grab power by all means. we have seen many lose their lives, some lose their limbs ,eyes, and some vital organs on their bodies once election approaches for all manners of reasons including rituals, kidnapping for ransom and hostage taking etc.

The fundamental principles of our corporate existence must be entrenched on the tablets of our hearts as a nation ,our values and morality must not be left behind in nation development as cliché as it may sound but the gospel of love amongst the people and being your neighbors keepers cannot be overemphasized because where there is love the act of murder, killings ,kidnappings will not be an option to be explored by politicians.

Charity they say begins at home, the upbringing of our children is very paramount to determine the type of society to be expected in the nearest future, love of God and love of neighbor must be thought by all and sundries , morals in our schools, churches, mosques must be taken very seriously and a compulsory part of our daily lives.

On the other hand the politicians of the day should not see politics as a do or die affair or as a get rich scheme but rather as a means of serving the people, as a call to leadership and above all as the contribution of their quota to mother nature. Our society has to be sanitized and the cries of innocent bloods that have been hitherto shed all over the country will no longer pollute the land and usher in a new era of peace, love and prosperity.

BREAKING:THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT DEPLOYS MANY OBSERVERS AHEAD OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

The Government of Britain deploys over 60 observers in 15 states across Nigeria for the general elections.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Liang, said this in a video that was shared on Friday while encouraging all  Nigerians ahead of the elections to go out and vote on Saturday.
She said despite the disappointment after the elections were postponed last week, Nigerians should not be discouraged to go all out and exercise their franchise through the ballot box by voting massively.
She rightly said that:
“Tomorrow is polling day again; we recognize the huge disappointment of Nigerians since they woke up last Saturday to hear the news that the elections have been postponed, but your vote still counts,” she said.
“It’s your chance to make a difference; not just to vote for the politicians of your choice, but also to play your part in Nigeria’s emerging democracy; helping to consolidate the progress since 2015.
“As a long-time friend and partner in Nigeria, we will be playing our part, we will have 60+ observers in 15 states around the country observing the election.
“And, of course, it is very important that INEC remains as the impartial umpire for this election.
“So please do go out and exercise your democratic right to vote. We wish all Nigerians all the very best for the election day”.
Stay tuned for updates on this page.

SENIOR ADVOCATE OF NIGERIA MR FEMI FALANA EXPLODES OVER POSTPONEMENT OF 2019 ELECTIONS

Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, today, lambasted the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over the ban on campaign for votes saying the limitation of campaign imposed by INEC should be reversed without any delay says the HUMAN rights activist,

In a release, Mr. Falana, who cited relevant sections of the Electoral Act, said: By virtue of section 26 of the Electoral Act an election may be postponed if a serious breach of peace or violence is likely to occur or on account of natural disaster or other emergencies.

“Furthermore, section 105 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria provides that if the federation is at war in which the territory of  the country is physically involved and the President considers that it is not practicable to hold elections the national assembly may pass a resolution to postpone the election. And such postponement shall not be more than six months at any one time.” Besides, he said: “The shameful postponement of the 2019 general election would not have occurred if the Federal Government had unbundled the INEC and ensured the practice of internal democracy in  the political parties. It is public knowledge that both APC and PDP have not committed themselves to electoral reforms. Hence, they have conveniently forgotten that the late President Umaru Yar’Adua had admitted that the 2007 general election  which produced his regime was highly flawed. Since the system will continue to produce flawed elections all democratic forces should mount sufficient pressure on the Federal Government to implement the recommendations of the aforesaid electoral reform panels, once the 2019 rescheduled elections are concluded.

“Meanwhile, INEC which  has shifted the general election by 7 days is alleged to have votes. With respect, INEC has not paid attention to  Section 99 of the Electoral Act which provides that the period of campaigning in public by political parties shall end 24 hours before polling day.” Since elections have been shifted the period of campaign has also shifted and will end 24 hours to the new polling day. “Therefore, the limitation of campaign imposed by INEC should be reversed without any delay. Furthermore, INEC should comply with all valid and subsisting court orders with respect to the candidates sponsored by political parties for the general elections.   Otherwise, the courts may annul some of the elections conducted by INEC on grounds of exclusion of qualified candidates.”  so he submitted

BREAKING NEWS!!!INEC POSTPONES THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS SCHEDULED TO START IN A FEW HOURS BY ONE WEEK

INEC POSTPONES THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS SCHEDULED TO START IN A FEW HOURS BY ONE WEEK

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the decision at a short press briefing at 2:44 am on Saturday morning.
According to the commission, the Presidential and National Assembly elections, initially scheduled for today, February 16, will now hold on February 23, while the governorship and state houses of assembly elections will take place on March 9.
He said, “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan, and the determination to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible.
“Consequently, the commission has decided to reschedule the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Saturday, 23 February 2019.
According to Mahmood Yakubu, the postponement will afford the commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of the nation’s elections nationwide.
The polls were shifted despite earlier assurance by the INEC boss that the commission has no plan to postpone the elections.
“This was a difficult decision for the commission to take but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy,” he added.
The press briefing followed a crucial meeting Professor Yakubu had with INEC’s 12 National Commissioners late on Friday night.
“Furthermore, the Governorship, State House of Assembly, and Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections are rescheduled to Saturday, 9 March, 2019.”
Professor Yakubu’s announcement confirms speculations that the electoral umpire would shift the polls after encountering challenges in the distribution of electoral materials.
The development means Nigeria has postponed its last three general elections due to various reasons

BREAKING NEWS: PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE CAUSE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT YEMI OSHIBAJO PLANE CRASH

Weeks back the Vice President Yemi Oshibajo was involved in an helicopter crash at Kogi state.
News reaching us reveals that the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has released a preliminary report of an investigation into the helicopter crash involving Agusta Westland W 139 Caverton Helicopters which the airlifted the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to Kabba in Kogi State.
The report attributed the crash to a phenomenon known as Brownout ( brownout is a phenomenon where the pilot cannot see nearby objects which provide the outside visual references necessary to control the aircraft near the ground. This can cause spatial disorientation and loss of situational awareness leading to an accident.), the AIB said the pilot crew lost visual contact with the ground at about 50 feet owing to a brownout– that enveloped the helicopter.
According to the agency, the helicopter experienced a hard landing and consequently rolled over.
While the AIB says the investigation into the crash is still ongoing, the Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Akin Olateru asked the NCAA to issue an advisory circular to helicopter operators on the effects of brown out and how to mitigate its effects.
Also he asked Caverton Helicopters to carry out proper risk analysis and assessment before operating flights into unapproved landing pad.
Investigation continues.

LOVE AND MARRIAGE: EXTENDED FAMILY DOMINANCE IN THE MARRIAGE INSTITUTION

Over the years we have experienced various degrees of interference that engulfs the length and breadth of marriages in our society . the family union is a bond that is unbreakable , inseparable and made from heaven.

Members of a family are related by the ties of consanguinity  and share common association with every member and in the Africa setting once a couple gets married the two love birds are not only getting married to each other but are also married to the families of each spouse a practice or rather a culture that has persisted and handed from generation to generation especially in black Africa.

Newly married couples are worst hit in this practice as the couple both tie the knots without any experience on what marriage actually is, practically speaking Marriage has established itself as the only institution where there is no graduation date because the couple involved keeps learning year in year out about each other only to discover as their years gets older that they are still learning about their partner.

Against this backdrop of lack of experience, the extended family system has thrived over the years in Africa ,with Nigeria as case study for the purpose of this write-up. the extended family has played a major role both to make or mar a marriage and unfortunately study has showed that a couple is better off in their marriages without the interference of the extended family.

A major area of challenge with the extended family system is when a couple gets married irrespective of the personal decision they both take as regards child birth at that early part of their marriage , the interference of the families has caused so many disheartening stories that we hear today that sometimes lead to break and makeups, separations and even divorces due to irreconcilable differences. immediately after the first six months after the wedding the extended families especially from the grooms family expect to see their wife with a huge and protruding tummy that will be easily noticeable and unfortunately if this is not the case the couple starts getting comments and body languages suggesting that there is a problem with the couple just because there is no pregnancy yet, this tradition has truncated some marriages , has led some couples to make rash and unnecessary decisions as regards child birth just to please their respective families some have resorted to early adoption of other children , some have gone fetish, chanting incantations or meeting the demi gods who some belief blesses people with children, some have resorted to asking their wives to make love to other men in a bid to get pregnant by all means while some have even connived with hospital personnel to steal newly born babies and bring to them how unfortunate.

Some couples have had their homes turned into refugee camps and a transit point by any Tom, Dick and Harry by both extended families. The couple after marriage have lost their privacy to family members who come in unannounced  not minding the prevailing condition of the host couple all in the name of its my sons house, my brother’s house or even my daughters house all unnecessary distraction s and extra expenses especially to newly married couples who actually need some years of privacy and togetherness that get their marriage grounded and fully establish.

Another area of concern is the area of Finances where the couple gets bombarded by requests and messages from both sides for financial burdens or even assistance a trend that is scary in the extended family system. We have seen couples struggle to stand financially especially after their weddings were they would have incurred huge expense and deficit and ordinarily should be left for t least 2 to 3 years of non-financial interference from any side of the families . many a time we have seen extended families send over their wards to the homes of these couples to live with them with or without their consent as a way to transfer their financial burdens to the married couple.

Worth mentioning is the problem of interference especially from mother in-laws though this trend is gradually fading away even in Nigeria.. some in-laws will want to have all the details of everything that happens in the daughter’s homes ranging but not limited to how much their son in-law gives the daughter for upkeep, whether he earns a lot of money, how good he is on bed whether he satisfies her in bed, to petty things like whether he snores, whether he his dirty or even whether he keeps other affairs outside etc.  and when they receive answers that contradicts what they expect problem starts as they engage their daughters and start giving negative advice that is inimical to the progress and happiness of their daughters. some in-laws also advice their sons to do exactly same thing that the wife does and ask unnecessary questions like can she cook well, is she lazy?, what time does she wake up, i hope she feeds you well, don't let he control your money  to mention a few absolutely unnecessary interference

Another interference that cannot be overemphasized is the extended family commitments that comes default for as long as you are married to your spouse , when there is an occasion in the families each spouse is expected to play a major role in seeing to the success of the occasion at this point there can be no excuse for non-performance as you are apportioned a financial target  and activities that you will fulfill towards that program this type of responsibility cannot be refused or delegated for someone else to do except of course if and when you part with a lot of money to compensate your inability to be there at that very time.

As much as we recognize these interferences I believe the tradition should change or decline from our lifestyles because the world is a global village and modernization and development has overtaken some of these practices that are already old fashioned Moreno we are not in a monarchial system. We will sustain the healthy extended family relations that will not impact on the married couple negatively or make them to take premature decisions or cause them a great deal of inconvenience and discomfort . Marriage is meant to be enjoyed and not endured so the societal factors must ensure that the environment is made conducive for couples to thrive and for the institution of marriage to flourish and produce companions ,best friends ,better halves and a healthy world to live, replenish the earth  and have total dominion.

COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLING (AKA) OKADA RIDING, A SOCIETAL MENACE IN THE CITY OF LAGOS

It is no longer news that the riding of motorbike aka Okada riding has become a household name in the city of Lagos and beyond.

Transportation from one place to another in Lagos has experienced a massive boost from place to place over the years since the Okada business experienced boost in recent times, its history which can be traced back to Benin as far back as the late eighties where it was ventured into as a survival strategy due to the harsh economic situation introduced by the SAP structural adjustment program that was supposed to help cushion the effect of the economic downturn that has seen many graduates at all levels First Degree, HND and especially non graduates turn Okada riders.

Since then commercial motorcycling has come to stay not only in Lagos but in most states of the country like Delta, Owerri, Ogun, PH, Ondo etc and has enjoyed enormous patronage from people for a whole lot of reasons. Apart from the obvious and easily identifiable reason as regards why Lagosians have embraced commercial motorcycling as a welcome development which is in pursuit of self-sustainability and poverty alleviation as the Okada riding is a business that does not require special skills or special intelligence to be able to venture into it, no tertiary education required, no training the basic requirement is your willingness to survive and stay afloat.

In the city of Lagos Okada riders are ubiquitous and easily accessible ,however despite been readily seen they come with a baggage of issues and challenges both to the riders, the passengers and the society in general. they have many times be seen to constitute a state of public nuisance and discomfort to the riders and pedestrians in Lagos. They have grown into a registered body of Association of Okada riders in the state and have a structure that involves a chairman , secretary, treasurer etc by so doing have stamped their feet as a body of people with a common goal and ambition.

However, even with the registered body of Okada riders and the expectation that some level of decorum or comportment will be exhibited by the Okada riders , it has been seen that this is usually a far cry from the expected and some of the riders have become a menace and a source of nightmare to the people due to their flagrant abuse of the laid down guidelines for their operation in their respective states . They have constantly engaged in fracas with the police and civil defense for flouting the directives little wonders why this is the case ,perhaps this may be as a result of the openness of the Okada market that allows any Tom and Harry to enroll provided he has access to an Okada and is willing to ride.

Worrisome is the fact that many have been sent to untimely deaths , some as permanent residents in the Igbobi orthopedic Hospital. Many have their limbs amputated or completely cutoff, some are squatters with traditional limb fixers as a result of the reckless riding of the Okada by the untrained rider who only speeds in a bid to drop the passenger and to pick up another with the intent to make more money again and again at the expense of careful riding, some riders text on Okada while riding i almost fell victim of such, as the Okada man kept coming towards me after he first followed a one way thankfully i was alert as he moved closer I realized he was busy texting so i skillfully swerved and averted the imminent danger just at the stroke of time, how fortunate for me because this is the order of the day and a very frightful one.

Lagos state government on its own has played its part to ensure that sanity is maintained in the society , the state has at a point banned Okada riding in the main metropolis , with restriction placed in major express roads and link bridges , at a time they introduced and enforced the wearing of helmet by both the riders and their passengers, they also enforced that the maximum passenger for each rider at every instant will be 1:1 meaning no bike rider is expected to carry more than 1 bike at a time , the government also enforced the no movement for Okada in the major roads as from 10pm to further reduce the accidents and criminality. however this is not the case these days as there has been a total disregard of these laws especially the helmets and the number of passengers that they carry at a time.

Nonetheless these noticeable vices are good reasons why the Okada riding should be banned from the street of Lagos but for some merits that the Okada still enjoys which ranges from their presence in most places hence easily accessible, it helps to beat the daily traffic in Lagos and meet up with critical appointments, it helps to maneuver terrible road pot holes that will ordinarily pull out tires of your vehicles and most importantly a source of livelihood to the teeming unemployed youths who see the Okada riding as a sustainable means of living since it does not require much capital, does not require power supply which is almost elusive to most people and where available estimate billing makes live very difficult.

We urge the Okada riders association to work more closely with the authorities especially the Federal road safety corps (FRSC) to ensure that we have a safe road where the traffic laws are adhered to as this will ensure that reckless riding is checked amongst the riders and also that road worthy bikes( Okadas) are on the road , the riders should wear id-cards with their name tags clearly seen as well. It is evident that the riders have come to stay so we as a people need to fine tune it and formalize their cooperate existence to enable them serve us properly and prevent further accidents on our roads that have sent many to early graves, Eko Oni baje o and God help Nigeria.

COMMANDMENTS FOR EXCELLENCE IN 2019, A WEEKLY SERIES CONTINUED by Michael Osemene

COMMANDMENTS FOR EXCELLENCE IN 2019

In 2019, Invest more in businesses and spend less.

Invest! invest!! and invest again :Decide that in 2019 you will consciously take up investment opportunities do not limit yourself to your jobs whose take home can no longer take most people home because of the prevailing economic conditions hence the need for multiplicity of the streams of income, go into the export business, invest in treasury bills, fixed deposits, commercial papers ,agro allied businesses etc. and save as much as you can.
Study has showed that the successful business men and women of today are those that boldly face the opportunities in life and always see what others fail to see, the opportunities in the challenges they face!, do not have a mentality of the poor that tend to spend all the money that they receive and end up saving less, go for that business, do not be afraid of failing even if you fail at the first instance you still fail forward and gain a new experience on one of the things to avoid in that business.

In 2019 learn to be appreciative of others ,say thank you when someone offers a helping hand . Saying thank you to people makes them feel honored and drawn closer to you , they will want to work together with you more and do businesses with you. people tend to be attracted to others that appreciate what they do and hence this will bring opportunities your way. you never know ,those you meet on your way up may turn out to be the ladder that will sustain you if and when you are on your way down, choose to be nice.

In 2019 be very positive and full of optimism : Take your daily self-Affirmation very seriously, set your mind on only positivity as whatever you exert energy doing gives result in the direction of your action .To every action you take you receive a corresponding reaction, your line of thought affects the type of results you get so make up your mind to think thoughts that are True,  honest ,Just, pure, lovely and of good reports full of virtue and of praise then surely you will be above at all times.

In 2019 choose to help others: Be a son or daughter of consolation to your world. Let your light so shine around you that people will through you see God in action.
Be the God that they see around them
Be the epistle that they read and get inspiration from in this year and become the extension of God in their lives don’t be selfish and self-centered. There is much love in sharing and the love of God is shared abroad in our hearts so show case love in everthing that you do. The world will be much safer if everyone demonstrates love to the people around them, show love and be an embodiment of Gods agape and liquid love.

In 2019 choose to be firm and do not compromise : No to cutting of corners,no short cuts to success but by hard work, dedication and persistence with God on our side.
Stand for something else you fall for anything! Let people know you for what you represent do not be ashamed to say NO  when it's absolutely necessary to do so, People will respect you once they recognize that you are a man or woman of integrity who knows his onions and they will naturally be attracted to you and bring their businesses and connections to you because they trust in you as a solution provider.

EMBATTLED CJN ONNOGHEN RESPONDS TO THE CODE OF CONDUCT TRIBUNAL IN DEFENSE

News reaching us reveals the response of the suspended CJN Onnoghen :

The Suspended and embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen’s response to the query by Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has been revealed. Chief Onnoghen in his response said ‘My Asset Declaration for Nos. SCN000014 and SCN.0000 5 were declared on the same day, 14th December, 2016 because I forgot to make a declaration of May, 2005 declaration of my assets after the expiration of my 2005 declaration in 2009.

Justice Onnoghen also said that he cannot recall precisely the total amount he had in his reserve at the time but it spread from his practice days as a private legal practitioner from 1979-1989. Some of the deposits were result of forex trading that he engaged in. AGRICODE and other investment returns were from proceeds of his investments .

I WALTER S. N. ONNOGHEN of THE SUPREME COURT OF NIGERIA hereby voluntarily depose to the statement averred herein knowing that whatever I write or state may be tendered against me as evidence in court. I also volunteer to state that the statement was not taken in evidence from me under duress but after the administering officer has explained and made known the details of the allegations against me. Rank/Position: CHIEF JUSTICE OF NIGERIA
Date of Birth: 22nd DECEMBER, 1950
Residential Address: CTN DRIVE ASO VILLA, ABUJA Date of 1st Appointment into Service: 1st OCTOBER, 1989 Date of Substantive Appointment: 7th March, 2017 Category of Appointment: TENURED Duration of Tenure (if Applicable): FOUR YEARS
Date of Declaration of Assets: 14TH DECEMBER, 2016 Details of Companies/Enterprises: NONE
Bank account Details: STD. CHARTERED 0001062667 AND OTHERS AS PER MY ASSET DECLARATION FORM No of Children: FOUR State any other full Time Employment (if any): NIL Name (s) of Spouse/Date of Birth: MRS NKOYO W. N. SCN000014 and SCN.0000 5 were declared on the same day, 14th December, 2016 because I forgot to make a declaration of May, 2005 declaration of my assets after the expiration of my 2005 declaration in 2009. Following my appointment as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria in November, 2016 the need to declare my asset anew made to realize the mistake and then did the declarations to cover the period in default. I did not include my Standard Chartered Bank Account in SCN. 000014 because I believed they were not opened during the period covered by the declaration. I did not make a fresh declaration of assets after my substantive appointment as CJN because I was under the impression that my SCN. 000015 was to cover the period of four years which include my leave as CJN. The deposits made in my US Dollar account No. 87000106250 with STD. Chartered Bank of $10,000 at different intervals of 28/6/11 were sourced partly from my reserve and saving from my estacodes including medical expenses. The same applies to my deposit of 27/7/11 of the sum of $10,000 twice. It is important to state that prior to my opening the US dollar account I had foreign currency which I kept at home due to the fact that there existed a government policy that proscribed the operation of foreign currency account by Public officers including judicial Officers. It was when I got to know that the policy had changed that I had to open the said account. Upon opening the account, I was made to understand that I cannot pay in more than $10,000 at a time and per payment slip. I cannot remember the total amount I had in reserve at the time but it spread from my practice days as a private legal practitioner from 1979-1989. Some of the deposits are a result of forex trading. AGRICODE and other investment returns were from proceeds of my investments into them. The withdrawals in the account are partly to pay children fees and upkeep abroad and further investments. My British Pound and Euro accounts with Chartered Standard Bank are savings accounts.
